The EQUICARES project supports access to innovative and sustainable mental health and care services by people in vulnerable situations through a blend of research, co-creation and policy solutions. The project applies innovative methodologies, including an advanced Levesque framework, Computational Social Sciences, and cost-analysis techniques to assess inequalities and design effective solutions. Using digital ethnography, EQUICARES maps and evaluates innovative mental health solutions, compiling insights in a dedicated Atlas for policymakers. Through pilot deployment activities in 8 areas across 7 countries, the project engages communities through Smart Health Labs to co-design and implement solutions.
Key Objectives and Vision
EQUICARES envisions a future where mental health and care services are universally accessible, inclusive, and sustainable, especially for vulnerable populations. Through cutting-edge research, community engagement, and digital innovation, the project empowers decision-makers and communities to co-create lasting, evidence-based solutions that reduce disparities and promote mental well-being for all. The project aims to identify barriers to mental health access, develop and test innovative, cost-effective solutions, engage communities through co-creation and digital tools, pilot these approaches across diverse sites, and deliver evidence to inform inclusive, data-driven policies.
What Sets EQUICARES Apart
EQUICARES distinguishes itself through a holistic, participatory, and evidence-based approach to transforming mental healthcare access for vulnerable populations. It places people at the center, engaging them as co-creators of solutions rather than passive recipients. The project expands the Levesque Framework to better reflect the complex realities faced by marginalised groups, capturing dimensions such as cultural relevance, stigma, and digital exclusion. Through the integration of advanced tools like a personalised and interactive AI-based Assistant, a dynamic Policy Dashboard, and an Atlas of innovative practices, EQUICARES not only identifies systemic barriers but also provides practical solutions and actionable pathways to overcome them.
How will it do it
To turn its vision into action, EQUICARES will:
- Analyse Barriers to Access by applying and expanding the Levesque Framework with mixed methods to understand how vulnerable groups experience mental health services.
- Engage Communities through eight Smart Health Labs across Europe where stakeholders co-design locally tailored mental health innovations.
- Empower Through Citizen Science by involving non-experts in research and solution-building at each pilot site.
- Leverage Digital Tools by testing an AI-based Assistant that supports mental health, boosts digital literacy, and identifies emerging needs.
- Pilot and Evaluate co-created solutions in eight sites across seven countries, assessing real-world impact and scalability.
- Monitor and Measure Impact using cost-analysis and performance tools to demonstrate effectiveness and the cost of inaction.
- Inform Policy through tailored briefs, a centralised Policy Dashboard, and a Replication Handbook to guide EU-wide adoption.
White Research’s Role in EQUICARES
White Research (WR), as the Project Coordinator, plays a central role in ensuring the successful implementation and strategic direction of EQUICARES. WR is responsible for steering the project’s strategic vision, managing timelines, resources, and communications to guarantee that all objectives are met effectively and efficiently. This leadership role is crucial for maintaining coherence between research, innovation, and policy activities, ensuring that the project delivers meaningful and sustainable impacts for vulnerable populations.
In addition to its coordination responsibilities, WR leads two critical pillars of the project: the co-creation and operation of Smart Health Labs, where communities in vulnerable situations are empowered to co-design mental health solutions, and the Ethics Requirements, ensuring that all research activities meet the highest ethical standards. Through these roles, WR not only drives innovation and inclusion but also safeguards the integrity and social responsibility of EQUICARES.
